Parks & Open Areas

Responsibilities

The Saratoga Springs Parks Department is committed to providing safe, well maintained parks, trails, and landscapes of city property while conserving natural resources. As employees of these public sites of this City, we will serve the citizens with integrity.

As a department, we are dedicated to the following statements:

  • Excellence: We will strive for excellence through sustainable park maintenance, proper employee training and supervision that leads by example. We will have constant determination to make the parks a better place.
  • Service: We will be helpful and fulfill our tasks to serve the public, the organizations that use our parks, and our fellow employees.
  • Safety: We will provide a safe recreational environment for the public through proper maintenance, inspections and timely repairs. We will strive for an accident free, safe work place by properly training all employees and eliminating or minimizing possible hazards.

The Parks Department maintains City-owned parks and open spaces. There are currently 29 City Parks; acreage totaling more than 260 acres. There are 18 Park Pavilions throughout the City. Pavilion rentals are available at select parks.

Please be aware that most park strips in the city are not maintained by the Parks Department. Although there area few sections maintained by the City, most are maintained by the adjacent property owner. Including residents, businesses and HOA's.

Park Maintenance

Fertilizing

Much of the fertilizers we use should be watered-in after an application to the turf. Properly watering the fertilizer ensures the product will percolate into the soil and become available to the grass through the roots. Properly watering the fertilizer will help dissolve and activate the nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other trace elements in the fertilizer to promote a healthy lawn. We created a video to help residents understand our fertilizing practices.

Rodent Mitigation

Rodent mitigation in City parks is important to ensure open spaces are ready for resident use and recreation programming. The city uses various types of rodent mitigation. It is important that these uses do not push rodents into other areas of the City that could affect residents. The methods used by the City are used for large industrial applications and meet industry standards for this type of mitigation. One method may create a larging popping sound when i use.

Water Conservation

We created a page on water conservation to share what the Parks Department is doing to conserve water in city facilities and provide information and resources to help residents conserve water at their homes. You can access that page by going to: Water conservation Page.
